In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
