Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Dramatic Overtime Win

The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.

The Thunder's star player scored the game-winning points late in double overtime as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the champions a positive start.

The Rockets' big man top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.

But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points, played a major role alongside the game's hero.

"Grit and defense," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, missed attempts, fortune or bad luck. We did enough defensive work to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."

Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their home court, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.

The Thunder defeated the Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the team relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.

The Pacers will have the opportunity to get some payback on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was not enough to prevent his new team the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.

Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were without the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from sciatica.
