Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has denied the charges to making false statements to US legislators and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's attorney filed the answer on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer declared he would seek to have the legal matter thrown out for multiple causes including that his defendant, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was indicted just days after the former president urged his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald told the court they aimed to present various legal requests to throw out the proceedings before a trial, stating the prosecution was vindictive and that a government lawyer was improperly appointed to assume control of the legal matter.

James Comey's proceedings was initially handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under scrutiny from the former president after his probe into a different political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

James Comey appeared in good spirits as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Failor and child Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the former government dismissed.

Following the reading to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was inquired if he grasped the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he stated to the judge.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was dismissed about a few months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the moment, the director was overseeing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Russia and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, James Comey triggered a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, resulting in criticism from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

Prosecutors assert the former director gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the legislative body by claiming he had not approved someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to news outlets data about the FBI investigations.

Via social media Mr Comey shared to his online platform after he was charged, he said he was innocent and accused the former president of behaving like a "dictator".

"My family and I have been aware for years that there are ramifications to standing up to Donald Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."

"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "So let's have a court case."

The accusations against Mr Comey came after the former president published on social media demanding his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and others.
